Kitchen Cabinets

How long does it take to build an average sized kitchen?
When cabinets are already assembled it usually will take about one 8 hour day unless there is a lot of trim like crown molding and decorative end panels etc. When it is RTA (ready to assemble) it will take a good bit longer as each cabinet has to be assembled separately. Then the layout and final design have to be complete before any installation can start.
-
What is a 10x10 kitchen?
Ten feet long and ten feet wide with only the very basic cabinets. Especially for the base as usually the range, dishwasher and refrigerator is included in the measurement. Be careful using this for budgeting. Usually, a 10 x 10 kitchen is used only for the price indication of your kitchen. Hardly ever, will a 10 x 10 standard kitchen fit properly in your new kitchen.
-
What is the average cost to build kitchen?
There is no average cost because of the different cabinets in a kitchen and the size. One way to make a good estimate is to price a base cabinet, say a base 36 and a wall 3630. Divide this by 3 feet and it will give you a cost per linear foot. Using pantries and crown molding can run the cost higher.
-
What are the best kitchen cabinets for a new home?
You should look around in places like Houzz and Pinterest for ideas and learn the new colors and trends first hand. All wood cabinets are the best choice. The type cabinet is up to the owner. Many choices exist such as raised panel, recessed panel, shaker style or applied molding. Also the overlay, partial or full etc.
-
What is the best material for kitchen cabinets?
Of course Wood is always the best material. Never choose particle unless the budget dictates. Countertops are always a serious decision. Laminate, Granite or Quartz are the usual considerations. Outdoor kitchens are totally different so you can include tile tops or concrete countertops.
-
What can you suggest for a kitchen cabinet?
Using Wall and base diagonal corner cabinets is always a good idea for better utility and looks. Lazy Susan's as the base cabinet is a little more expensive but is the best fit for most base corners. Also, an easy reach cabinet fits the same only it has fixed shelves. Some people prefer the fixed shelves as it allows more storage.
-
What are the common styles of a kitchen cabinet?
Shaker style is the most common and popular. However, there are many other choices and some of them are about as popular such as raised panel or recessed panel. The heights sometimes depend on the ceiling height. For example, a standard 8 foot ceiling usually takes a 30 inch tall cabinet. A higher ceiling can take any height such as a 30, 36” or 42”, which are standard heights.
-
What are the ways to update the kitchen cabinets?
Changing the drawer fronts and doors are the cheapest way and also can give the look of a new kitchen especially with new countertops. Sometimes it is cheaper to replace the kitchen cabinets depending on the circumstances. It all depends on the cabinet and countertops. Sometimes just painting the cabinet and/or changing the countertops will be enough. The age of the house needs to be considered as well
-
How to replace kitchen cabinet drawers?
Replacing the kitchen cabinet drawers is very easy, easy to remove and just insert the new one to replace the old one. If you need to update the glides, then use metal, soft close, and self-closing drawer fronts and doors. They are not easy to install but you can find videos on how to help. The most important thing is to make sure they are lined up properly and aligned.
-
What should I consider when looking for a kitchen cabinet door?
You should consider the overall appearance you need but you should pretty much replace the drawer fronts as well. Getting a sample (if you are ordering online) is a good idea. Just a door quarter is enough for you to see the wood and the style of the whole door. Sometimes the drawer front will be a slab and not match the door so be careful there when selecting.

Are white kitchen cabinets still popular?
White kitchens are by far the most popular. How long that will last is anyone’s guess. Colors of cabinet trends are always changing. Nowadays it is popular to use a different color for an island cabinet. For example, a white kitchen with a blue island. Even the island countertop can be different from the main kitchen.
-
What is the best material to use for white kitchen cabinets?
The same as any other cabinet. Maple is the one used most of the time. However, Alder, Oak, Hickory, Ash, and Poplar are also used. White cabinets can be painted white or they can be finished with a professional spray and finish coat for long-lasting protection. They can also be thermofoil. Especially for vanity cabinets. Sometimes the doors are made of HDF (high-density fiber) which prevents them for contraction and expansion in temperature changing environments.
-
Do base cabinets have a finished matching toe kick?
Yes, always and they really make a finished look to cover up the seams between the cabinets. Also adding shoe molding is another good idea for appearance. There will be seams between the base cabinets. They are barely noticeable but should be covered with a matching color and finished toe kick. If it is a stand-alone cabinet, it does not need a toe kick.
-
Can I buy just the doors?
You must go to a Door manufacturing company to buy only doors. Usually, kitchen cabinet companies won't sell only the doors. A custom cabinet company will build doors for you but they usually are pricey. Your best way is to go to a cabinet door company that only makes and sells doors and trim. If you buy doors, you probably need to buy drawer fronts as well. Otherwise, the addition of only the doors will not be a good look.
-
Do you offer unfinished cabinets?
No, we only offer finished cabinets. The market for unfinished cabinets is so limited, we do not offer them. There are companies that only sell unfinished cabinets but they usually only offer full 53 van loads. That is a lot of cabinets! Usually about 300 cabinets plus. Familiar unfinished cabinets are usually made of red Oak and usually have particle board carcass (sides). Unfinished cabinets can be a good choice for limited budgets and your choice of stain and colors.

Cabinet Terms
Ball Bearing Glides - Smooth gliding guides that are usually side mounted. These guides slide on small metallic balls that bear the weight of the drawer.
Butt Doors - Door on a double door cabinet that when closed, nearly touch each other. Typically, a 1/8" gap is allowed between the butt doors.
Cam Locks - A cylindrical lock or fastener commonly used for cabinets. Often there will be a male and female part. Once inserted, simply turn the metal piece 180 degrees clockwise to lock into place. Cam locks are an easy and secure way to connect cabinet panels. They are commonly found in ready-to-assemble cabinets.
Center Stile - Vertical strips of wood that divide cabinets for extra support and durability. Usually seen on larger width cabinets.
Concealed hinge - a hinge that is not visible on the front of a cabinet door. Concealed hinges are attached to the inside surface of the door.
Dado - a groove that is cut into a piece of material so that another piece may slide into it. The inside surface of cabinet drawers may be 'dadoed' with a groove to accept the drawer bottom panel which helps make for a stronger joint between the drawer side and bottom panels.
Dovetail - Woodworked joints that are used to connect drawer sides to the drawer face without the use of exposed hardware. These joints are known for their durability. The wood is cut in a series of angled portions that look like dove tails. These “tails” interlock and are difficult to separate once attached.
Epoxy Coated Glides - A fast drying white protective coating that is baked into hardware metal guides. It is low VOC and can be used for sidemount and undermount hardware.
Exposed hinge - a hinge type that is visible on the outside edge of the cabinet door when the door is closed.
Face frame - the wood frame that is attached to the front edges of the top, bottom and sides of the cabinet box. The door gets hinged to the face frame. This frame helps provide rigidity to the box. Cabinet designs that incorporate this feature are called "framed" or "face-frame" cabinets.
Framed - a cabinet design that uses a 'face-frame' which is typically a wood frame attached to the front edges of the cabinet box (where the door gets hinged to).
Frameless - a cabinet design that does not use a frame on the front outside edges of the cabinet box. The front of the cabinet box is formed by the edges of the top, bottom and side panels of the cabinet box. The cabinet door typically covers these edges when closed.
Full Extension Glides - Hardware that provides full-access to drawers and allows the drawer to pass the face frame.
Full Overlay - A cabinet design whereby the cabinet door or drawer front covers the entire face frame so that only the cabinet door is seen with no part of the face frame visible. A cabinet is also considered full-overlay when the reveal is less than ¼ inch.
Half Overlay/Partial Overlay - A cabinet design whereby the cabinet door or drawer front partially overlaps the face frame. When the drawers/doors are closed, more than ¼ inch of the face frame remains visible.
Inset - a cabinet design whereby the doors fit inside of the face frame when closed (rather than overlapping and sitting on top of the face frame).
Medium density fiberboard (MDF) - a wood-based product that's produced by the combination of very small wood fibers and a glue, resin or similar bonding agent. MDF can be more easily shaped than products like particle board due to the consistency of the material formed by the small fibers. MDF can be used for shelves, doors (typically painted or covered with melamine) and other cabinet parts. It is very dense and resists warping. It is commonly seen in the center panels of recessed cabinet door styles (like a Shaker door) to prevent warping and cracking of the center panel during the wood’s natural expansion and contraction throughout the year.
High density fiberboard (HDF) - a wood-based product that's produced by the combination of very small wood fibers and a glue, resin or similar bonding agent. Due to a higher density than medium density fiberboard (MDF), HDF is also thinner. HDF can be more easily shaped than products like particle board due to the consistency of the material formed by the small fibers. HDF can be used for shelves, doors (typically painted or covered with melamine) and other cabinet parts. It is very dense and resists warping. It is commonly seen in the center panels of recessed cabinet door styles (like a Shaker door) to prevent warping and cracking of the center panel during the wood’s natural expansion and contraction throughout the year.
Melamine - a durable plastic, similar to laminate that can be applied to certain areas of cabinets. It is easy to clean and resists stains, chipping and fading.
Miter - A woodworking joint where two beveled pieces adjoin to make a 90 degree angle.
Mortise and Tenon - a means of wood joinery that involves part of one piece being inserted into a notch or hole in the mating piece. A typical mortise and tenon joint has a square protrusion coming off the end of one piece that fits tightly into a square 'hole' or notch in the piece it's joined to. The pieces that make up the outer frame of a cabinet door might be joined using this technique.
Overlay - Overlay refers to the amount of face frame that is covered by the cabinet door or drawer front.
Partial overlay/Half Overlay - A cabinet design whereby the cabinet door or drawer front partially overlaps the face frame. When the drawers/doors are closed, more than ¼ inch of the face frame remains visible.
Particle board - a wood product made up of very small wood pieces and fragments that are fused together with a glue or resin under mechanical pressure.
Plywood - an all wood product made up of several layers of wood with the grain direction running at different angles with respect to each other. This orientation gives plywood greater strength and stability in comparison to solid wood. It reduces the tendency of wood to split when nailed at the edges and reduces expansion and shrinkage, providing improved dimensional stability.
Rail - the horizontal pieces of a face frame or door frame (in contrast to a "stile" which is the vertical member of the frame).
Raised Panel - Doors that have slightly raised center panels.
Recessed Panel - Door style where the center panel is inset or recessed. A common example is a Shaker door style.
Reveal - The exposed portion between the end of the cabinet face frame and the door.
Self Closing Drawers - Drawers that have mechanisms or magnets that guide the drawer closed. These are not soft-closing.
Sidemounted Glides - Drawer hardware that is mounted on the side of the drawer.
Slab Front - A flat door panel with no design, moldings, recessed or raised areas. Commonly gives a more contemporary appearance.
Soft Close Drawers - Drawers containing a piston that respond to various levels of pressure and weight, absorbing the impact and closing the door slowly and safely.
Stile - the vertical pieces of a face frame or door frame (in contrast to the "rails" which are the horizontal pieces of the frame).
Undermount Glides - Drawer hardware that is mounted underneath the drawer. Undermount guides can usually carry more weight than sidemount guides.
Veneer - thin layers of wood applied to plywood or MDF before it’s treated with stain. Veneers can be used on the sides of exposed cabinets (for example, on the end of a run of cabinets) and on the interior surfaces of cabinet boxes.

Kitchen Cabinet Design
-
What is a popular kitchen cabinet design?
There is no most popular. Every kitchen is unique and different. No cookie-cutter cut kitchens will work except for apartment buildings and similar. The design can be a galley design, which is two parallel rows of cabinets or similar. A U shape, an L shape, or a Box shape is also one that can be used. It totally depends on the kitchen dimensions, appliance connections, and the customer’s needs.
-
What is the most popular kitchen cabinet color for 2021?
White is the most popular color. However, new colors are now popular as well. Such as many shades of grey, blue, and cream. Check Houzz and Pinterest to see what they say is trending. Again, the customer dictates the color. The customer and designer will take a lot of things into consideration, such as the wall colors and the floor color and style. Even the countertop type and color is important as a factor in choosing the color.
-
What are directrta cabinet design suggestions?
There is a big difference between cabinet design and kitchen design. The design of a cabinet is usually best made of all wood except the doors or door center panels made of MDF for expansion in the center due to heat and cold. Self-closing doors and soft closing drawers. Kitchen design is a much bigger situation with so many things to consider. Using 6 way concealed European style door hinges is a great idea for a beautiful look. Taking your time and getting advice and choosing the right products are very important for any kitchen.
-
What is the most efficient design for a kitchen?
It depends on the space available. Often times, that dictates the design. Sometimes only a galley design will work while other times it may be a U-shaped kitchen etc... Engaging a professional designer is important. Using a CAD software program such as 2020 Design is a great idea. Also producing 3-D images of your plans are good to see. Choosing, the best height of the wall cabinets is an important ingredient. The corner cabinets can use a Wall Diagonal Cabinet and the Base corner cabinet can be either a Lazy Susan or an Easy Reach (fixed shelves). Budget permitting, use these. Otherwise, stick with blind wall and base cabinets.

What are the good designs for kitchen furniture?
Kitchen furniture is so unique and expensive that we hesitate to offer that. Usually, kitchen furniture has legs instead of fitting on the floor. That means dust etc. can get under the cabinet and make it difficult to clean. Kitchen furniture being more expensive can sometimes have adjustable legs for varying the height. Otherwise, all base cabinets are 34 ½” high. It is a national standard also they are always 24 inches deep. Kitchen furniture can offer some unique designs and functions so some of their measurements can be a little different from national standards.
-
Are the kitchen cabinets all wood or particleboard?
All of our kitchens are all wood except the doors or the door center panels (to control expansion and contraction due to temperature changes). There is a huge difference between particle board and all wood cabinets. We chose not to sell particle board because of the short life when wet or damaged. Wall cabinets are not a huge problem but the base cabinets close to the sink base or anywhere there is a possibility of water damage is not a good idea. The big box stores usually sell particle board cabinets because they are relatively inexpensive and in stock. All wood cabinets are the best way to go when choosing the type cabinets even though they are a little more expensive.
Frameless and Framed Cabinets
-
What does frameless cabinets mean?
It means it is a box with no face frame. Usually ¾” sides as the hinges will fasten to the carcass wall instead of on the face frame. The thicker sides tend to make it a good bit stronger than framed cabinets even though no face frame. Using corner blocks and a good method of construction is imperative. That way there should be no yawing or misconfiguration when installing them.
-
How do you install frameless cabinets?
The same way as face frame cabinets. Finding the studs in the walls are super important. The wall cabinets can be very heavy once loaded with dishes. So it is very important they be hung with long screws and definitely into the wall studs. The base cabinets must be absolutely level and also screwed into the wall studs. Usually, the doors are removed from the cabinets until they are installed. Then the doors can be reinstalled (attached).
-
Are frameless cabinets more expensive?
NO, usually about the same price. The difference in cost is usually influenced by the door styles and sizes. Frameless cabinets are a little misunderstood. It is not a weaker cabinet than the framed cabinet. Actually, it can be described as a FULL ACCESS cabinet because the face frame is not in the way of placing things in the cabinets. Frameless is also referred to as a European style cabinet. If assembled properly using nails or screws and wood glue it can be like a rock. Bottom line it is just as strong as any other cabinet.
-
What is better frameless or framed cabinets?
That question remains to be unanswered. It is debatable. Both are usually screwed and glued for a better product. As mentioned earlier, it is not the cabinet, but how it is assembled or built that determines its sturdiness and quality. Frameless and framed (face framed) cabinets are equally the same. The cost is not significantly different; however, the frameless cabinet will be heavier because of the ¾” sides as opposed the ½” sides on the framed cabinet. The doors will be the same.
-
Are frameless cabinets less sturdy?
No, because the carcass is thicker, and once assembled it is rock solid also. As explained above the framed cabinet and the frameless cabinets are equally strong if assembled (built) correctly. Sometimes it is feared the frameless cabinet will get out of shape while being handled prior to being installed. This will not happen if corner blocks are installed in all four of the corners with screws. This should be available for viewing in the assembly videos. All this said, some people will only use framed cabinets because of an old standard.
-
What is a framed kitchen cabinet?
This cabinet has a face frame instead of being frameless. It will be all wood and acts as a picture frame around the face of the cabinet. This is the only difference between a framed cabinet and a face framed cabinet except for the sides. The framed cabinet has a standard thickness of ½” sides and the frameless cabinet has ¾” sides. The framed cabinet is the most used and relied on in the industry. It is a standard that has been around a long time. The frame is usually made of 100% wood and about 2” wide and around the opening of the cabinets where the doors go to cover it.
